Динамичный музыкальный стиль послевоенного поколения "бума рождаемости" [baby boom] и поколения их детей. Для него, при значительном разнообразии разновидностей, характерны танцевальность, преобладание ритма над мелодией, использование электроинструментов с усилительной аппаратурой. К рок-музыке относятся (в порядке их появления): рокабилли [rockabilly] и рок-н-ролл [rock'n'roll], которые в 1960-х подверглись серьезному влиянию английских ансамблей "Битлз" и "Роллинг-стоунс", подчеркивавших блюзовые корни рока. Калифорнийские группы ("Бич бойз" [Beach Boys] и "Джефферсон эрплейн" [Jefferson Airplane]) внесли подстили серфер [surfer music] и эсид-рок [acid rock]. Течение возрождения фольклора [folk revival] выдвинуло "фольклорный рок" [folk rock] (Боб Дилан [Dylan, Bob]), а чикагская студия "Мотаун" [Motown] представила музыку соул [soul]. К рок-музыке относятся также такие ее разновидности, как танцевальный стиль диско [disco] и оглушительный "тяжелый металл" [heavy metal]
